Biography I
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (ruh NWAHR) was the son of a French tailor. He was one of seven children in the family. His first experience with painting came when he started to work for a porcelain maker who made fine dishes. Since their 13 year old boy wanted to be an artist, his parents thought this would be a good job for him. He painted flowers on cups and saucers. When the music teacher at school tried to teach him music, he just spent his time making drawings on the music books.

James Whistler Biography
Whistler was born in Massachusetts. His father, Major George Washington Whistler, who had graduated from West Point, was a civil engineer. His mother Anna McNeill came from an aristocratic southern family. When he was nine the family moved to Russia where his father was building a railroad. Six years later his father died and the family returned to America. James himself entered West Point, but dropped out in his third year when he failed to pass a chemistry exam. He was later quoted as saying, “Had silicon been a gas I would have been a ‘Major-General’.” He worked for a while as a draftsman drawing maps, but he got in trouble for drawing pictures in the margins of the maps. He finally decided to just pursue art, and in 1855 he sailed to Paris. He was to never return to America.

Homer Winslow Biography
Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 –September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America and a preeminent figure in American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations.

Winslow Homer biography excerpt from Wikipedia.org

Winslow Homer, the son of a Boston hardware merchant, spent his childhood fishing instead of studying art. His only early training was an apprenticeship to a lithographer for whom he drew pretty girls to adorn the covers of popular songs. By 1857, however, he was an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly drawing happy scenes of country life at first and then, during the Civil War, pictures of the loneliness and the pastimes of soldiers far from home.
