Pierre Auguste Renoir was born on February 25, 1841 in Limoges, France. He was the sixth of seven children born to Léonard Renoir and Marguerite Merlet. Pierre’s first experience with painting came in 1854 when he took his first job working in a porcelain factory painting deigns on fine china. Learn about the life and art of celebrated German painter, printmaker and theorist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). Start with the biography, and then click and print these fun curriculum resources.

Biography
Albrecht Durer (DYOO rer) was born in Nuremberg, Germany. We know little about his early life except the fact that he was the son of a goldsmith and had seventeen brothers and sisters. We know a lot about him as a man because of the abundance of art works he left and his writings. He seemed to realize he would become famous and wanted people to know a lot about him and the pictures he made.

Also ten letters survive that he wrote to his friend Willibald Pirckheimer. They remained lost for 200 years until they were discovered hidden in a wall.

Learn about the life and art of celebrated French modern artist Henri Matisse. Start with the biography, and then click and print these fun curriculum resources.

Biography
Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambresis in Northern France. His parents, Emile Matisse and Heloise Gerars, owned a general store where they sold household goods and seed. Henri was their first son. As a young man, Henri traveled to Paris to study law. In 1889 he returned home to work in a law office as a clerk. It was around this time that he had an attack of appendicitis, which required surgery. To make the long recovery more enjoyable his mother gave him a paint box. It was then, at the age of 21, that Matisse discovered painting and decided to become an artist.
